Homage to Theft

Homage to Theft: To the Composers I’ve Stolen From (2014)
for clarinet and violin (9′)

When I begin a piece for a group, I often start by listening to music with a similar instrumentation. In this case, I started by listening to Kurtág’s Hommage a R. Sch. for clarinet, viola, and piano. Later, when I   began the second movement, I listened to a long Morton Feldman piece for inspiration. By the end, I realized that each movement was inspired by a different composer, so I decided to dedicate the piece to artistic plagiarism. Thankfully, I don’t have the talent to plagiarize faithfully, so I think that the piece comes off as my own.
