Fantasy (2017–2018)
for Pierrot ensemble + marimba [or piano trio or solo piano] (5′)
Fantasy is my arrangement of a piano piece I finished in July 2018.
The piece is an Allegro with an improvisational feel (hence the title), written in an approachable modernist style, at times taking inspiration from Ravel, Stravinsky, and Debussy. Most of the themes are accompanied by insistent, motoric rhythms, and the music is in a compound meter practically throughout. In fact, rhythm is the constant driver of the piece, whether through polyrhythms, mixed meters, or asymmetric rhythms. These rhythmic devices pose significant problems for all three players, who are confronted with different challenges in each section.
