12 Prolation canons (2012)
for two to four instruments
In the spirit of J.S. Bach’s The Art of the Fugue, I originally wrote these canons without specific instruments in mind. The last four were performed by the NY-based string quartet PUBLIQuartet.
The canons are in three sections: the first four are for 2 instruments, the next four are for 3 instruments, and the final four are for 4 instruments. In addition, in each set of four, the third (i.e. Nos. 3, 7, and 11) is in an aksak rhythm and the last (i.e. Nos. 4, 8, and 12) is atonal.
